Certificates and Awards

Awards and Certificates that I have achieved are listed below.

Dean’s List – Thompson Rivers University

Bachelor of Arts Fall 2021, Winter 2022, Fall 2022/Bachelor of Education Fall 2023

I believe that this achievement reflects that I have had success academically during my time at TRU. In high school I did not prioritize academics because I did not enjoy the content, but since I have started attending University I have found the classes much more engaging and have worked on my studying skills. In particular, I was incredibly motivated to get into the Bachelor of Education program, so I did my best to attain the highest GPA possible before I applied. I can be very motivated when I am engaged with what I am doing, so luckily I will be working in a field that I find very rewarding. I am grateful for the chance to learn and develop as a future educator at TRU, and I will continue to strive to do my best as a student and continually improve as a lifelong leaner.

English Department Book Award – Thompson Rivers University

Achieved for essay written in 2021

This was an award that I won for an essay I wrote for a third year Children’s Literature class. The professor of this class was Dr. Elizabeth Reimer, who really set the bar high for the quality of work that we submitted to her. This award reflects a learning journey that I followed, as earlier in the class I had received marks that I was not happy with for my passage analysis. I went to see Dr. Reimer after class, and to my absolute horror she thoroughly and completely justified her reasoning for my poor marks received for this assignment. It became obvious to me that I had not done as good of a job as I had thought. This inspired me to do better, and for the class’s final essay I implemented her suggestions to improve my writing and came out with something I was proud of. I believe that this is a lesson about the dangers of sugarcoating feedback with students, and that sometimes it is best to respectfully criticize the work that students hand in to you so they can become the best writers that they can be.

Emergency Child Care First Aid & CPR/AED

Red Cross, John Tod Centre YMCA-YWCA

This certificate was a part of my training to become a Child and Youth worker at BGC Kamloops. I participated in a full day seminar run by the Red Cross that taught me how to respond different emergency situations that might occur in child care. The thought of a student requiring CPR is incredibly distressing, but as a teacher I want to be capable of responding to a situation like this quickly and effectively. I look forward to renewing my Child Care First Aid certificate when required and practising my CPR and AED skills so that I can be ready for an emergency scenario in my classroom.
