The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action are the product of the Commission’s report in 2015 from the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. It consists of 94 Calls to Action to the Canadian federal government, provincial governments, municipal governments, various church groups, and society at large. They are a response to the legacy of Canada’s Residential School system and cover a wide range of areas, including child welfare, education, language and culture, health, justice, and more. They are, in effect, steps necessary for Reconciliation to take place between Canadian settler society and the First Peoples, Métis, and Inuit of Canada. I will respond to the Calls to Action by participating in language restoration and recovery of Indigenous knowledge in my classroom. Additionally, I will make learning about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action and their subsequent implementation or lack thereof by the Canadian Government a part of my Social Studies program.
